Late summer is a warm, hazy embrace with the occasional crisp breeze whispering that fall is on its way. It’s a bittersweet time. I try to hold onto the hot feeling of sun on my skin and the seemingly effortless glow the sauna-like air of the city gives me, yet I feel relief knowing the cool autumn is on it’s way.
I kicked off the long weekend watching Luca Guadagnino’s Call Me By Your Name, which is quite possibly the most melancholic movie to ever exist. Thinking about when Oliver asks Elio what he does all season in Italy and he says “wait for summer to end…” I don’t want to wait for an ending, I want to live in (and dress for) the moment.
Though some might see flaws in this film, its impeccable style is undeniable. I am inspired to dust off my denim jacket, read more books, wear more oxfords, and put on a Sufjan Stevens album.
Every outfit is innately casual and sexy. The wardrobe feels accurate to the early 80s and Northern Italy, yet completely classic—rooted in menswear, but ultimately genderless, ageless and timeless. I think it’s the perfect way to dress in early September.
What’s most beautiful to me about the styling of this movie is that the actors re-wear key pieces throughout the film, adding authenticity and depth to their characters’ personal style. This highlights a critical takeaway—your fashion identity develops through the way you wear and restyle the pieces you already own.
The film’s costume designer, Giulia Piersanti, told Vogue that some of the style inspiration came from from a Charles Hix book featuring early Bruce Weber photographs, which resonates with me as an Abercrombie ex-pat who has spent years sifting through his images. I’m a sucker for his evocative, candid style and appreciation for classic Americana nostalgia.
Using Elio and Oliver as my September style muses, I’ve recreated a few of my favorite looks to help myself remember that summer’s not over yet and it’s okay to embrace the golden days if you’re not quite ready for pumpkin spice and cable knits.
My favorite Elio looks.
My favorite Oliver looks.
Now I am going to spend the rest of my weekend romanticizing what’s left of summer and dancing to ‘Love My Way’.
Stay toasted, xx.

Hell ya Brooke - you nailed this. I had never considered the androgynous nature of these fits but it’s true, and big part of why they feel timeless imo
