In February, I rewatched Mad Men. Season two, episode seven, Bert Cooper buys Four Reds by Mark Rothko for his office, sending the entire firm into a debate over the investment potential of “smudgy squares.”
“Maybe you’re just supposed to experience it. ’Cause when you look at it, you feel something, right? It’s like looking into something very deep. You could fall in.”
On a whim in April, I posted five of my favorite Rothko paintings. It became my top-performing note to date. There’s just something about Rothko that’s easy to love. Driven by a desire to communicate something shared and deeply human, he painted to explore fundamental emotions like tragedy, ecstasy, and doom.
The paintings are simple, but never static. A sunset. An ocean. Sunlight in your eyes as you look up from the grass. Every color under the sun, working together and sometimes entirely alone.
I present to you: The Rothko Rainbow.
